Why Postural Control Matters: Lessons from Sport-Specific Training Research
Posture isn’t just about standing up straight — it’s foundational to athletic performance. A 2023 scoping review by Erika Zemková and Zuzana Kováčiková, published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, sheds light on how sport-specific training influences postural control and its direct relationship with performance.
The review analyzed 126 studies and found compelling links between postural balance and athletic outcomes in precision sports like shooting, archery, golf, and dynamic sports like ice hockey and tennis. Athletes with better static and dynamic balance tended to perform better, suggesting that refined postural control helps with everything from accuracy to agility.
However, a striking gap emerged: only a handful of studies explored how these balance improvements stem specifically from sport-related training versus general fitness. That means many athletes — and coaches — may be overlooking the targeted postural work that could elevate performance.
So what does this mean for you?
Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a competitive athlete, addressing postural imbalances isn’t optional — it’s essential. Poor posture doesn’t just affect how you move; it can limit your potential and increase injury risk.
Start by identifying imbalances, especially if you specialize in a particular sport. Work with a professional to include sport-specific stability drills and neuromuscular training into your regimen. Improving how your body holds itself under stress could be the missing piece in your performance puzzle.
Better balance, better performance. Don’t overlook your posture — train it.
